MARATHON RACE PROGRAMME
SATURDAY 11th March 2006
(see below for details)

On behalf of the members and committee of Burleigh Point Outrigger Canoe Club I would like to welcome paddlers to the sixth annual Burleigh Point Grand Prix Regatta.

The club was founded in 1998 by paddlers who saw a need for a club in the central Gold Coast. The Gold Coast City Council graciously allocated an area on the banks of Tallebudgera Creek close to the ocean for canoe storage, and the club has grown steadily in members and equipment over the last 8 years. We cater for paddlers of all ages and abilities, with members ranging from Juniors to those well into their 60’s.The club was founded on the concept of catering for all levels of ability and retaining the enjoyment factor in our outrigging. Our unofficial motto, “we do this because it’s fun!” reflects this commitment.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Gold Coast City Council for their ongoing support of our club and regatta, and the members and committee of the Tallebudgera Surf Lifesaving Club for their support.

We hope that everyone attending on the day enjoys a day of paddling on interesting and challenging courses in the best of outrigger tradition.

Peter Anderson
President
Burleigh Point Outrigger Canoe Club Inc

Race Rules
All events will be run in accordance with the Regatta Rules of the Australian Outrigger Canoes Racing Association Inc.

Protests
Protest shall be in writing on the prescribed “Protest Form” and shall be delivered to the Race Director no later than 15 minutes after completion of the event together with a lodgment fee of $50.00. The lodgment fee shall be refunded if the appeal is successful

A quorum of three (3) members of the Management Committee of A.O.C.R.A. Sth Queensland Zone or such person appointed by the said committee shall constitute a Protest Committee. The Protest Committee shall hear, investigate and rule on all protests and other matters brought before it by the Race Director. Any ruling made by the Protest Committee shall be final

Equipment
Only canoes that have been issued with a current Compliance Certificate, or otherwise approved by SQZ Management Committee are eligible to be used in any event. Failure to comply is a cause for disqualification. Members of the SQZ Committee will conduct sport checks.

Support Boats
All support boats (which shall be deemed to include surf skis or any other water craft supporting or coaching a team in an event) must remain at least 100 metres distance from all competing teams or competitors (R.R. C.7).

Trailer Parking
Canoes can be unloaded at the Spit Boat Ramp however trailers must be removed to the parking area on the northern section of the Marine Stadium carpark. An area for trailers will be set aside and marked with barriers.

Life Jackets
It is a requirement of Queensland Transport that all OC6 canoes carry 6PFD’s when using the Gold Coast Seaway. Please ensure that all club canoes have lifejackets included and that a 25m tow rope is carried on all canoes.

Race Courses
Weather and conditions permitting most races will have the maximum time in open ocean available. All Junior and Novice races will be conducted in enclosed waters. If conditions are unfavourable, an alternate course inside the Broadwater will be used.

Safety
As previously noted, all canoes must carry 6PFD’s when using the Gold Coast Seaway. Towropes must also be carried (min 25m x 12mm). As the Broadwater and Seaway are heavily utilized by powered craft all steerers must whenever possible avoid using the main shipping channels. When using the Seaway, all canoes should stay close to the Southern wall. All steerers must use common sense when approaching moored craft in company and ensure that sufficient room is available for canoes inside them to pass such moored craft in safety.

TEAM CAPTAINS AND COACHES PLEASE NOTE THAT RACE TIMES MAY BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DURING THE PROGRAMME.

• Where more than one category is racing in the same time slot and on the same course, the starts of each division will be staggered by 1 (one) minute. Teams are to line up in their respective categories behind the line in the order specified at the briefing prior to the start.
• Medals will be presented immediately following the conclusion of each event.

• Mixed gender races are available in the Open Short Course categories only .

• U12-U14 and U16-U18 Juniors may be combined if numbers do not justify separate races. In this case the course will be over the shorter distance and held at the earlier timeslot. (U12,U16) If requested by coaches and teams a combined-age/combined club relay may be arranged to provide an extra event for Juniors. No fee will be applicable for this event but no medals will be awarded.

Note:
All clubs are to ensure that sufficient canoes are available.

Due to the short time available for the organization of this regatta, club & team nominations together with entry fees are to be received 7 days prior to the date of racing.

An information pack with forms, race maps etc will be forwarded to clubs by 1st March.
