Burleigh Point Outrigger Canoe Club is now entering it's ninth
season of competition and is growing ever stronger in terms of
numbers and competitiveness. The club was established on the 1st
of December 1998. Up to this time, the existing clubs were concentrated
in the northern and southern areas of the Gold Coast. Members
from these clubs felt there was a demand for a competitive club
to be established in the central Gold Coast region to accommodate
the increasing interest in the sport.
From
humble beginnings of 2 x (6 man) teams, the club has steadily
expanded to a current membership of over 50 senior members. Ages
of club members range from 16 years to golden masters in their
late 50's. From its inception the club has been especially strong
in the senior masters (over 45 years) and open men divisions,
achieving a number of places at Australian Championships and numerous
wins at South QLD and Northen NSW regattas.
2001
saw the club achieve its inaugural Gold Medal at the Australian
Championships, with our open men ('B' division) winning the sprint
event. Our club was represented at the 75km Molokai World Marathon
Championships in Hawaii (October 2000). The senior master men's
team achieved a creditable 4th place in the grueling event.
The
club looks forward to increasing levels of success in all current
divisions as well as fostering the growth of junior and women's
teams.
